When it was announced that there was going to be a prequel, House of the Dragon, to the most famous show of the last decade, the fans of the show were thrilled beyond we can elaborate. It had to be THAT good, as it had to match the greatness of its sequel – The Game of Thrones!
But the audience also had their own doubts. Why? The last season of GoT was something no one had ever expected. The show ended up crowning the three-eyed raven, Brandon Stark, the king of Six Kingdoms (yes, the north became a separate kingdom), and Tyrion Lannister as the hand of the king while the people who watched the show wanted Jon Snow (or should we say Aegon Targaryen) to be the king of those kingdoms.
The audience was also shocked by the way Daenerys massacred the whole King’s Landing, when she was supposed to be the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, rightful Queen of the Andals, and the First Men, Protector of the Seven Kingdoms, the Mother of Dragons, the Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, the Unburnt, and the Breaker of Chains.
Introducing the queen to the show was everything – BADASS! But we all surely gasped when she was MURDERED by her lover, and our favorite, Jon Snow. It was a heartbreaking moment for every one of us.
But moving on, let’s see what House of the Dragon has for us!
House of the Dragon – The Yays and Nays
House of the Dragon takes us 172 years before The Game of Thrones. 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen was born. The show zooms in with the aging and simultaneous dying of Prince Baelon and the crowning of Prince Viserys Targaryen at the King’s Landing.
The biggest concern as of now is the taking over of the crown after King Viserys. While the king has made his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the heir of the seven kingdoms – there still seems to be some tension. It turns out the king did this because he had no other children and a dead wife (queen Aemma). Soon after, Alicent of Hightower and the king get married and they have children – 1 daughter and 3 sons.
Now with more children and competitors in the way (thanks to the ever-growing and confusing Targaryen Family tree), Princess Rhaenyra is tense.
What was the most surprising thing about the show? It wasn’t Criston sleeping with the princess or the princess making out with her uncle Daemon. It was king Viserys living more than anyone might have thought. By episode seven, the king has only lost his hair and half an arm, but he’s still alive.
While we see the princess and Daemon making out in the 4th episode of the show, we later see Leanor Velaryon and Leana Velaryon getting married to Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Daemon Targaryen, respectively.
When did all of this happen? It happened in the 10-year time lapse that happened after the princess got married.
Cut to the 7th episode (and the latest as of now) of the show.
The show’s seventh episode was centered around the death of Deamon’s wife, Leana Velaryon. She killed herself as she was struggling to give birth to her baby.
The House Velaryon and Targaryen come together to mourn her absence. While in the dark night, Prince Aemon takes over the biggest dragon in the world – Vhagar.
This leads to the banter between the kids and Aemon ends up losing an eye.
This fight among the children increases the tension between princess Rhaenyra and Queen Alicent.
What adds to the spice of the show, and particularly this episode, is the chemistry between Daemon and her niece.
While it is shown from the beginning that these two share a bond and Daemon wants to marry her, the seventh episode finally shows them having intercourse on a deserted beach.
While everything seems to keep pace and go well, are the viewers thrilled about the show?
Well, first, the viewers could not see the seventh episode of the show – well, they watched it, but thanks to the lighting and the color grading of the show in episode 7, no one could figure out what was really happening.
The show also could have done a better job with the way the dragons in this show were designed. While the dragons in Game of Thrones seemed beautiful, the House of the Dragons dragons did not impress some viewers.
The ones who watched the show from a critical point of view could clearly see the anomalies of the show – they could see that the show used too much of a green screen while they could have shot at realistic locations.
If you aren’t aware of it yet, the show already has the next season confirmed. And the show has already taken a time-lapse of 10 years where the characters have already grown so much.
While some think it was too soon to do that, we think it was a fair thing to do. The story needs to grow more, with the kids in the age group of 10-13, there will be more stories to show.
Summing Up | House of the Dragon
We think the idea of a show called “House of the Dragon” is excellent and the show is doing an OKAY-ISH job.
But we also think that when one is creating period fiction, it is hard to tell what is going to come next. So Fiferst is also excited to know what is going to come next!
