The story begins with Jane moving to Monterey with her son Ziggy, who was born after a sexual assault by a guy named Saxon Banks. The memories of Jane’s past still haunt her every day and she refuses to talk about this as well. As she moved in, her life gets more stressful as her son Ziggy got accused to bully her classmate Amabella Klein, the daughter of Renata. Jane was fortunately supported by her new friends Madeline and Celeste.
Madeline is having her problems in life as she is having an affair that her husband Ed has no idea about. Madeline’s ex-husband Nathan is now married to another woman named Bonnie. Celeste has 2 kids Josh and Max. Her husband Perry is very abusive to her and beats her often. Later it turns out Max was the one who bullied Amabella as he learned this behavior from his father.
During the time of a fundraiser party, Perry finds out Celeste is about to leave him because of his abusive behavior. Later in the party, Jane for the first time saw Perry and recognized him as her abuser and Ziggy’s biological father, Saxon. After this Perry started fighting with Madeline, Jane, Celeste, and Renata. As he was fighting with them, Bonnie arrived and pushed Perry down the stairs leading to his death. They later covered his death by calling this an accident.
